—Stage Right/Installation/

Hidden Door Arts Festival, Edinburgh

Invited Artist Kristina Chan is thrilled to present Stage Right, a print installation for the 4th Edition Hidden Door Arts Festival Scotland.

Edinburgh, as a city renowned for its letterpress and lithographic excellence, reinforces the relevance of printmaking within the work and the site. Printmaking was the first medium of publication, reproduction, large scale representation. It gave history the Gutenberg Press, first Bible, literacy, dissemination of ideas, philosophies, revolution and reconciliation; in its ink and its reliefs is our very history engraved.

Stage Right will serve as a reflection upon the theatre’s cultural history, of printmaking, and of the city itself. The installation will be exhibited along the length of the right balcony, overlooking the main auditorium. It will be a triptych nearly 9 meters in length. It will serve as homage to the once-abandoned Leith Citadel Theatre: its resurrection from dereliction to once again take centre stage, both metaphorically and literally, to today’s emerging artists.

“I explore the relationship between society and entropy. The lifeline of our narratives, in a rather broadened sense. I want to understand how we mark the world and how, it in turn marks us. The relationship between the natural world and what we build in the name of civilisation, culture, and history. The rise and decline and recurrence of it all, how monuments become ruins then relics, listed and condemned, rehabilitated, developed, and revitalised anew.”
